Surface Area & Volume Calculator for 3D Shapes

Area & Volume — Common 3D Shapes

Hint: Each shape shows the formula used. Triangular bases use Heron's formula for area from side lengths. For pyramids, surface area may require slant heights — provide them to compute lateral area.

The Area and Volume Calculator provides fast and precise calculations for geometric shapes such as spheres, cylinders, cones, and prisms. It streamlines complicated formulas, saves users time, and assists students, engineers, and DIY enthusiasts in determining important geometric measurements in their everyday math tasks.

What Is Surface Area?

Surface Area measures the total surface covered by a 3D shape.

It is expressed in square units, such as:

  • square meters (m²)
  • square centimeters (cm²)

What Is Volume?

Volume measures the space a 3D object occupies.

It is expressed in cubic units, such as:

  • cubic meters (m³)
  • cubic centimeters (cm³)

Area & Volume Formulae

Sphere

Surface Area:

A = 4 π r 2

Volume:

V = 4 3 π r 3

Where:

  • r = radius of the sphere

Cylinder

Surface Area:

A = 2 π r ( h + r )

Volume:

V = π r2 h

Where:

  • r = radius
  • h = height

Right Circular Cone

Surface Area:

A = π r ( r + l )

Where, l = r2 + h2 is the slant height.

Volume:

V = 1 3 π r2 h

where:
r = radius
h = height

Rectangular Prism (Box)

Surface Area:

A = 2 ( lw + lh + wh )

Volume:

V = l × w × h

Where:

  • l = length
  • w = width
  • h = height

Triangular Prism

Surface Area:

A = ( bh ) + ( s1 + s2 + b ) L

Where:

  • b = base of triangle
  • h = height of triangle
  • s1, s2 = other two sides
  • L = length of prism

Volume:

V = 1 2 b h L

Square (Regular) Pyramid

Surface Area:

A = b2 + 2 b l

Where:

  • b = base length
  • l = slant height

Volume:

V = 1 3 b2 h

Triangular Pyramid (Tetrahedron)

Surface Area:

Add the areas of all triangular faces.

A = A1 + A2 + A3 + A4

Volume:

V = 1 3 × ( Base Area ) × h
